Tiny Sunglasses Are So Last Year—Just Ask Rihanna

If there was one accessories trend that dominated 2018, it was tiny sunglasses. Celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Solange made teensy eyewear inescapable last year, but the ‘90s-style Matrix shades may already be on their way out. Always one step ahead of the curve, Rihanna has embraced a bold new silhouette with oversize shield glasses. In Manhattan this week, the superstar has shown off multiple pairs that feature studded embellishment, metal frames, and transparency.

For a night out with friends on Sunday in Midtown, she matched her red lipstick to a pair of bold shades while keeping the rest of her look simple. The subdued tones of her outfit—oversized pinstriped suit jacket, baggy wide leg jeans, and gray hoodie—kept all the attention focused on her statement accessories. The ensemble she wore to attended 718 Spank’s concert yesterday was similarly understated with a neon blouse providing a pop of color beneath a bell-sleeved navy blazer, jeans, and Balenciaga’s knife stretch boots. Still, the focus remained on the sunglasses, this time in black with what appeared to be a Fenty logo engraved on the side.

The sighting of her brand name led many to wonder if Rihanna was in fact giving a sneak preview of her own sunglass designs. The popular Rihanna fan account, Haus of Rihanna, was among the first to point out the logo on Instagram and others quickly began to speculate. While the star has yet to confirm any news, the prospect of another stylish Fenty venture is a welcome one. Whatever the case, one thing is for sure:

Rihanna is doing what she does best yet again, looking past what’s trendy now, towards what we’ll all be wearing next.
