On Dhanteras, it is considered auspicious to buy gold and silver items like jewellery, utensils, coins and so on.
Considering the high price of gold and silver products, purity of the metal is always a concern. Therefore, to ensure purity of gold and silver one should buy Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmarked items. The following four signs are currently embossed on BIS hallmarked gold and silver items:
a) BIS Mark
b) Degree of purity in Karat and Fineness (for gold item) or Purity grade/Fineness (In silver article)
c) Assaying/Hallmarking Centre’s Identification Mark/Number
d) Jeweller’s Identification Mark/number
Hallmarking of gold and silver jewellery/items is voluntary. Therefore, many jewellers, including well-known, reputed ones sell their jewellery without BIS hallmarking.
To resolve this problem, BIS provides the list of jewellers that are licensed by the Bureau to sell hallmarked gold and silver items. The list of licensed jewellers can be accessed on the BIS website.
Follow the steps below to access the list.
Step 1: Go to www.BIS.gov.in
Step 2: Under the ‘Hallmarking’ tab, select ‘Jewellers Registration Scheme’.
Step 3: A new webpage will appear on your screen. Select ‘List of licensed jewellers’.
Step 4: A new webpage will open on your computer screen. The list of licensed jeweller is divided into gold jewellers and silver jewellers. If you wish to buy gold jewellery, click the gold jewellery option. Similarly, if you wish to buy silver jewellery, click on silver jewellers list.
Once the list of jewellers opens you will find that the list in each metal is further dividend region-wise. For example, if you want to view the list of licsensed jewellers in South Delhi, you will have to select the state as Delhi and the district drop-down menu choose ‘South Delhi’.
You also get the full list of licensed jewellers in the country by selecting ‘All’ under state and district.
